Turkey Trot

Today was the annual Turkey Trot at the Independence Dam State Park. I can't remember how many years I have participated in this run, but I know it's been quite a few.

Today was one of the coldest I remember. It was 20 when we left the house, so I'm not sure how much it warmed up, if any, before the start of the race. At least there was no snow/ice this year like there have been in past years. It was a beautiful, sunny day, and the roadway was clear.

The field was quite crowded for this particular race. They had the most participants ever!

It was a fairly uneventful race. I ran with my friend for the first half (the first two miles). Curt was at the turnaround point. Then I felt warmed up, so I took off. I know I passed a few others in my age group on the way to the finish line. It felt good to run. The sun was shining, the air was crisp, and I felt energized. I was amazed when I saw the end of the course.

When they read the names in my age group, the 3rd place finisher had a time slower than mine, and my name was never read for any of the other places. I went back to the table, and they had forgotten to record my time. They thought they lost my card, but they did find it ... But the person who they originally said was 3rd place was not there, so I did end up with a medal. I don't care if I don't place, but when I do, I want the hardware :) There were new people doing the statistics this year and there were many more people than in the past, so there were bound to be errors. I've done better than 3rd in this race before, but my time today was just as good. There are just a lot of fast women in this age group (50-59).

Now it's time to make bread and turkey.

First November Outdoor Run

I guess I didn't keep my resolution -- I have not been running very much the last few weeks. I did get on the treadmill a few times. It's just been so busy. I know that's not a very good excuse, because when I'm busy I'm usually more stressed, and that's when I really need to run! Plus, I've put on about 4 pounds, and I need to get that off.

Today was a chilly, windy, wet morning, but I decided I really wanted to run outside. The annual Turkey Trot is in less than three weeks, so I figure I need to get used to running outside in the colder weather, anyway. It was about 40 degrees outside when I started, with a light drizzle. At least it is not snow - yet! I ran the back way to the high school and back as many streets are still torn up. I ran up the hill by my house and then did a short Riverside loop, and ran up the hill a second time. On the way out to the high school I was running into the wind, and about two miles into the run I started getting diaphragm cramps again. I just backed off my pace a bit and was able to recover. Most of the way back, except for the loops, I had the wind either at my back or at a side angle, so it wasn't as bad.

I ended up with 6.05 miles, so I feel good about that. I was a little cold and damp, but my weather gear did keep me mostly warm. This run was a good way to start my weekend.

It's been a long time

I didn't run at all this week, even on the treadmill, so it's been one week since I ran. I knew I needed to get up this morning and run. It rained all day yesterday, and is supposed to rain today, so I wasn't sure what to expect.

I woke up to a nice, sunny autumn morning. It was a little cool -- about 40 degrees out. I put on some of my cooler weather gear and went out the door. I wanted to stop at 2.5 miles, and I wanted to stop at 4 miles. But, I kept going and managed to get my 6 miles in -- actually 6.1. I didn't see any other runners/walkers, or even any wildlife this morning.

It's amazing what a week without running has done -- I felt so out of shape! But, also, I have not been eating very well this week, so that's probably a big part of it. I am determined to start eating better again this week, and I will run more, even if it's on the treadmill. No more taking a week off unless it's absolutely necessary!

Finally!

I finally was able to go outside and run. I've been using the treadmill during the week. I did buy some pepper spray yesterday, so I hope to start my morning runs again.

Today started rather emotionally. My son and his girlfriend broke up, and she and I talked this morning. It's hard, because we really felt close to her. But, these things happen. We will continue to spend time with her, though, as a family friend. So, I really, really needed a run today!

It is a beautiful Autumn day. It is the perfect temperature for running, the sun is shining, the air is clear. I ran the back way past the high school, Ginter Road loop, and then the back way home because no pedestrians are currently allowed on the Jefferson Street bridge. I didn't do the Riverside loop, but I did finish with the sprint up the hill. I ended up with 6.3 miles.

Now it's off to a soccer game, and then Band Spectacular.

First Annual Fountain to Fountain 5K Race for Women's Health

Today was the Fountain to Fountain 5K race in Defiance. It was a chilly start to the race. I let fashion overrule common sense, and I wore shorts instead of more practical long pants. Never again! But, I was all pink! Since it was run for women's health, and this is "think pink" month, I had to do it.

I was fine until about mile two. Then I started getting diaphragm cramps and I felt like I couldn't breath. I had to walk for a while, but then I was able to start running again and finish the race. I am still coughing and wheezing a bit -- I've probably got a touch of the virus that's going around my household.

I ended up with a time of 25:26, but I think the course was a little short. I ended up second in my age group, yet again. There is one runner I just can't beat. But, this time I was keeping up with her until I had the problems at mile two. Maybe some other time! I received a nice water container as a prize.

Now it's time to continue on with my busy weekend. It's supposed to be a beautiful one, so maybe I'll get out for a run tomorrow. I've been on the treadmill a few times this week, and it's just not the same (but it's better than not running at all).

Sunday Afternoon Run

Today is another beautiful Fall day. The sun was shining and it was the perfect temperature. I decided to go for a short, fast run in preparation for the 5K coming up.

I'm used to morning runs, with little traffic. Today it was so noisy! I didn't see any other runners. I saw quite a few teenagers riding bicycles, and the roads were very busy.

I ran to the college and back, and then did the Riverside loop. I ended up with 4.5 miles. It was shorter than usual, but I don't want to overdo it. It was really a good run, and I feel great!

Gotta run.

Beautiful, Chilly Fall Morning

I was finally able to get outside for a run. I did a few on the treadmill this week - UGH! But, I had a bad feeling the last few early morning runs, and somehow I don't quite feel safe right now. I've learned to trust my instincts.

It was a crisp morning when I started out -- under 40. I was careful not to overdress, though. I did wear my running gloves, because if my hands are cold, the rest of me stays cold.

I had to go the back way to the high school, then down Carter Road for a change (rather than the Ginter Road loop). Then I basically came back the same way, due to the road construction. I did run past the house so I could finish with the sprint up the hill.

It was a good run. I saw one other runner and a bicyclist, but the roads were fairly empty. It was a beautiful day, clear blue sky, and just the right temperature, once I got going. The sun was shining, and I feel much better. I ran the first 3.1 miles at a fairly good pace, trying to get ready for the 5K next Saturday.

If I can run as fast as I did today in training, I will post my fastest time ever for a 5K. But, I'm not counting on it. I don't sign up for races in anticipation of winning or running fast. My goal is always just to finish and to have some fun. I sign up because they usually benefit some charity (this next one is for Women's Health) and to keep me motivated. When I can afford to travel, a race also gives me an excuse to get out of town!

I may not post as much now, because I am NOT going to post my treadmill runs. Those would be so boring! Mainly -- well I went this far, at this pace, watching this recorded TV show or movie ...

Gotta run!

Sunday Run

I prefer to run in the morning, but I had too much to do today. First I waiting for my brother's call, which always makes me a little down. Then I had to work on bills - ugh. Finally I mowed the lawn. It was in dire need and the grass was fairly tall, making it more difficult.

It was 11:30 or so before I was able to leave. I took my water bottle with me since I knew that, even though it is the end of September, the run would be warm.

I started out the back way to the high school. I saw Mr. Keel mowing the lawn as I ran. There were actually quite a few people out mowing, so I was not alone in my yard work this morning. I then went a little ways down Carter Road, and the Ginter road loop. Since Jefferson is closed to pedestrian traffic, I had to go back up the big hill (I can't remember the name of the street right now), and basically the back way home. I did not do the Riverside loop because I was too tired and that would have added another couple of miles. I did end with the sprint up the hill by my house, though. I ended up with 7.32 miles. I would have liked to have gone 8, but my energy was gone. It's been a busy, stressful week, I was a bit upset today, and I'm more energetic when I do morning runs. Well, I also mowed the lawn, so that took some of my energy!

I feel better emotionally, but more tired than usual. When I'm tense, I carry it with me for part of the run, and that's more tiring. Now I'd like to take a nap -- but alas there is too much work to be done. So much for lazy Sundays!

Finally Friday

I really didn't want to get up this morning. It's been a busy week with little chance to catch up on any sleep. But, since my last run was Tuesday, I knew I couldn't wait another day. I have been feeling the lack of running both physically and emotionally. I am really starting to not like running in the dark, which is another reason I have not been getting up to run like I should. I may have to check out my treadmill soon and make sure it's all set for use. I am running a 5K in two weeks, so I can't slack off now.

I did the usual morning route -- through town, Lowe's parking lot (double loop), mall parking lot, Riverside loop, finishing with the sprint up the hill. The Jefferson Street Bridge will be off limits to pedestrians until sometime in December, so the double loop in the Lowe's parking lot will be a normal part of my route now.

It was hazy this morning, not quite foggy. I saw a couple walking, but no other people outside of vehicles. It was a nice run. I ended up with 6.52 miles. I feel better, but tired.

Tuesday Morning Run

Today was another early day. I really didn't want to get up, but since I hadn't run since Saturday I needed to run. I figured even a short run would be better than no run.

It was a little cool, so I wore a long sleeve shirt. I ran pretty much the usual early morning route. Since the Jefferson Street bridge is temporarily closed to pedestrians, I knew I couldn't do that short loop. So, I took an extra loop in the Lowe's parking lot, and a little larger loop in the mall parking lot. I then ran through town, down Jefferson a bit, and finished with the usual Riverside loop and the sprint up the hill.

I saw an elderly man walking downtown. When I was running back towards town, about at Circle K, I was startled at the sound of footsteps behind me. Another crazy fool was out running this morning, and he ran past me (and continued through town at a much faster pace). I don't keep my ipod so loud that I can't hear things like footsteps behind me.

I feel pretty good after the run, but a little more tired than usual. It's been very busy the last week or so. I ended up with 6.55 miles -- not bad when I didn't even really want to get up to run.

Saturday Morning Run

I was finally able to run in the daylight! I started around 7:00 or so this morning. It was a little cool, around 55 degrees. There was a beautiful sunrise. The air was crisp. In other words, it was a great morning for a run.

I ran my usual early morning route -- through town, Lowe's and Mall parking lot, and out Jefferson Avenue. Since it was light, I went a little further than my usual weekday run. I went to the Baptist church, turned and went up Cleveland Avenue. Cleveland Avenue has a great hill. I was going to run by the high school, but I saw a bunch of people in the street -- I think there was some sort of walk today. So, I turned around and went back down Cleveland, back to the usual Riverside loop with the sprint up the hill, and home.

I felt good when I was finished. My hip was a little sore again, but that's something I think I'm just going to have to deal with. I need to make sure I keep up with my exercises to help my hip and legs. I've been neglecting to do them on a regular basis, and I can feel it!

I ended up with 8.50 miles, a great Saturday run. My stress level is definitely better after a good run like this.

Morning Run

This is a short post because I have to drive into the office today.

I ran my usual early morning route today. I started at 4:15 and it was a perfect morning. Well, can you really call it morning when it is so dark outside? Work has been very stressful and will be for the next few days/weeks, so I really enjoyed this run. I notice, however, that my arms are sore, so I must be holding a lot of tension in my body today.

It was a good run at a pretty good pace. I ended up with 6.55 miles. I didn't see a single person running/walking/biking, and I saw very few vehicles. Must be everyone slept in today!

Running with a Migraine

I woke up with a migraine this morning. However, the last time I ran was Saturday, so I felt the need for a run. I didn't take any medication before I took off because I didn't want to upset my stomach any more than it already was.

It was a nice, crisp morning, around 55 degrees outside. I did the usual -- through town to Lowes parking lot, the mall parking lot, back through town to the Jefferson street bridge, the Riverside loop, and the sprint up the hill by my house. I was not the only crazy person out at 4:30 a.m. -- I saw one bicyclist, two walkers, and one other runner. I found my reflective vest harness and wore that today, so I'm sure I was quite a site -- harness, led lights on the hat, etc.

My headache is a little better after the run (but not my stomach), but I feel the need for a long nap. Unfortunately, work starts in about 20 minutes! And, I have too many projects going on so I can't miss any work. Maybe I'll get a nap in during lunch.

My pace was a little off this morning, most likely because of the headache. I still ended up with 6.5 miles, so I'll be better later.

Rainy Run

Since I hadn't run since Wednesday, I felt I needed to run today, for both physical and mental reasons. When I first woke up there were thunderstorms going through, so I contemplated getting on the treadmill. I went back to sleep and woke up about an hour later, and it was just raining.

I checked the radar, and it looked like there was a little break from the heavy rain and thunderstorms. So, off I went. It was a pretty steady rainfall the entire run. But, it was the perfect temperature, and really a nice morning for a run. I didn't want to venture too far from home in case the radar was a little delayed. I went the Ginter road loop, Riverside loop, the sprint up the hill by my house, plus a little doubling back to get 6.25 miles.

It was a good run. My legs felt good. A few days off from running probably helped me recover from Sunday's 1/2 marathon. The rain was not too hard, but hard enough to keep me cool. I saw a flock of wild turkeys while I was running on Ginter Road, and another runner, so I wasn't the only fool out there this morning!

What a great way to start my Saturday morning.

Short recovery run

Today was the first time I ran since the 1/2 marathon on Sunday. I am still a little sore from pushing it that last mile or so, and I don't want to overdo it. Also, I stubbed my toe (clumsy me) on Monday night, and the end of it was still pretty discolored when I checked it out this morning.

It was fairly cool when I started out this morning -- in the upper 40's. After a few minutes, I was no longer chilly and it felt good to be out and running. I ran through town, Lowe's and Mall parking lot, and back home. I did not do any of the "loops" I normally do as my legs started to feel pretty tired, and Riverside is torn up (including in front of my driveway). And, I did see one other runner crazy enough to be out early this morning.

I ended up with 4.25 miles. My stubbed toe is now almost completely discolored, but it doesn't really hurt. I feel OK, just tired. Hopefully the run was enough to improve my mood!

Cleveland Clinic River Run Half Marathon - UPDATED

Today I ran the Cleveland Clinic River Run Half Marathon. What a great run! This run starts at Wallace Lake in Berea, and ends at Memorial Fields in Rocky River. It goes through the Metroparks, with one short loop through a neighborhood.

The morning started out fairly cool. I parked at Rocky River High School and took the shuttle bus (a school bus, actually) to the start of the race. We arrived about an hour before the race, so there was time to stretch, use the facilities, etc.

The race started around 8:00 a.m. I started toward the back of the field, and it was a little crowded at first. It wasn't too bad, though. This 1/2 marathon is a beautiful, scenic run. Somewhere after mile 5 a gentle rain started falling, and continued throughout the race. That made the race even better! Only runners really understand the thrill of running in the rain. About 3/4 of the way through, there was a hill almost identical to the one by my house -- the one I try to end each run by sprinting up the hill. So, at least some of my training paid off! This particular hill in the marathon was relatively easy.

My ankle held up through the entire race. My hip started hurting a bit, but that's nothing new.

I was actually shocked when I saw the sign for mile 6 -- it felt like I had been running for only a short time, and I was almost halfway through the run. When I got to mile 12, I realized I was close to finishing with 2 hours. I tried to pick up the pace a bit, but I didn't quite make it. According to my Garmin, I finished in 2 hours and 35 SECONDS. I'm curious to see what the official results are. At least I was close, and I have something to set as a goal for the next time I run a half marathon. This was faster than the 1/2 I ran 3 years ago; I'm not sure of that time right now (I'll look it up), but it was over 2 hours. And, my only goal this time was to have fun, enjoy the scenery, and finish the race -- which I did.

All in all, it was a great experience. I have no complaints -- the water/sports drink stops were great, the facilities were more than adequate, and so forth. I hope to run this one again.

And, for those of you who really know me, this next statement will surprise you. After the run I came back to our friends house, showered, and went to church with them!

Gotta run

***UPDATE***
According to the "official" race results, by chip time was 2:00:27.27 -- and I came in 4th place in my age group. I guess that is not too bad for a race I only decided to run two weeks ago!

Another morning run

I'm trying to stick with my morning runs. Sometimes (well, most of the time) it is difficult to get up by 4:30 a.m. to get my run in, but I try. Anyway, today was another one of those days. I didn't run yesterday because my legs, especially my knees, were sore, so I knew I had to run today. I just need to make sure I don't want to overdo it before Sunday's race.

I went the usual morning route -- downtown, Lowe's parking lot, mall parking lot, back through town, Jefferson (just on the bridge as it was too dark to go all the way to the church), Riverside loop, and up the hill by my house.

Surprisingly this morning I did see other people out. I saw one runner around 5:00, then I saw a couple of people on bicycles and a few people out walking. I think today was the first time I have seen other people out and about on one of my early morning weekday runs.

I ended up with 6.5 miles. I want to take it easy the next few days and not over train or get injured. I did twist my ankle this morning - dang potholes -- but I'm icing and elevating it, and it should be OK.

Accidental long run

There is a reason this is "the accidental runner" blog.

I went to Dave's Running shop in Toledo yesterday for new shoes. I wanted to get some in time to get them broken in for the September 7 race. Of course, I can't get just shoes. I ended up with two pair of Asics GT-2130's (my favorite shoes) - one in pink! I also got a bottle with hand grip so I can run with it, and a running shirt (on sale). On we went to another sporting store, and I ended up with new running shorts (pink to match the shoes) and another running shirt, both on sale of course. Now I'm all set for the race. I haven't gotten any new running clothes in over a year, so I don't feel too bad spending the money.

Well, today I planned to do a short run, about 4-5 miles, to start breaking in the shoes and get used to the hand grip bottle. I wore the pink shoes because that's the pair I plan to use on Sunday. I went the back way to the high school, and planned to do the Ginter Road loop and then back home. Well, I felt so good in the new shoes, the hydration from taking the bottle with me, had some great music on my Ipod, it was a beautiful morning, etc. I actually did forget to turn on Ginter road. Before I realized it, I had run to Watson Road! I'm not quite sure what I was thinking, other than how much I was enjoying the morning. When I realized where I was, I turned around, went back to the Ginter Road loop, and finished with the Riverside loop and the sprint up the hill. Instead of the 4-5 I planned, I accidentally ended up with 8 miles! I feel great, but I still have to mow the lawn yet this morning. I guess I got a good start on getting the shoes broken in.

Another good long run

I wanted to get one more good long run in before the 1/2 marathon next week, just to make sure I'm up to it. It was a beautiful morning for a run -- cool, not too humid. I started out shortly after 6:00 a.m., so it was still dark. I started with the usual morning route - through town, Lowe's parking lot, the Mall parking lot, and then back through town. I went out Jefferson, but this time I kept on going past the Baptist Church. Instead of going all the way to Watson Road, I decided take a left and go down Carter road, past the new elementary school. I ran all the way to 15 (at least I think that's the road), and then back, finishing with the Ginter Road loop (Carter technically becomes Ginter once you cross Jefferson - right is Ginter, left is Carter), the Riverside loop, and, of course, the sprint up the hill by my house.

I got to see the sun come up over the river again. That is always a beautiful sight. I saw several people out walking, and even a few runners. As I was crossing the bridge on Jefferson on my way back to Riverside, I looked down towards the river and saw a deer in the field with her two fawns, grazing on the grass. The only other wildlife I saw was a rabbit here or there.

It was a nice run, and I feel pretty good. Barring any injuries or me doing something stupid like tripping this week, I believe I'll be ready for the 1/2 Marathon on September 7th. I ended up with 11.09 miles this morning.

Gotta run ...

4:15 a.m. run

I had to make an early, early morning run today. Now that the kids are back in school, if I don't make it early, I'll miss my spot for taking a shower, and that certainly would not be good! I'm glad I signed up for a race to keep myself motivated.

So, I started out early this morning, while most of the town was still asleep. It was a nice, cool morning. I thought I felt a few sprinkles along the way, but it was hard to tell if it was rain or just humidity in the air.

I did pretty much the usual route - through town, around the Lowe's parking lot, the Mall parking lot, back through town. But, I didn't go all the way to the Baptist church. I got across the bridge and then realized just how dark it was, even with my hat with the lights in it -- once past the bridge there were no street lights. And, it was too early for the sun to come up. So, I turned around and finished with the Riverside loop and the sprint up the hill by my house.

I ended up with 6.52 miles. And now I feel ready to take on the challenges of the day. It will be a long day, ending with a soccer game tonight.

Keep on running ...

Evening Run

I really didn't feel like running this evening. But, I didn't run Monday morning because I was too tired from our Sunday trip to visit Earl at Miami University, and I didn't run this morning because I had a migraine. I didn't plan to run tomorrow morning because it is the first day of school for Chris and Kate. Since I am signed up to run a 1/2 marathon in less than two weeks, I knew I absolutely HAD to get a run in somewhere.

I dropped Chris and Kate off at the High School to get on the bus to the soccer game, then came home and got ready to run. I almost didn't go, then I talked myself into it. I just got started when Curt called, so I almost turned around. But I reminded myself of the race coming up. About a mile into it Earl called for some laundry tutoring, but by that point I figured I couldn't turn around.

I'm glad I kept on with the run. After a few miles I started feeling better physically and emotionally. I may have actually run off the remains of today's migraine; only time will tell on that one! I ran the back way to the high school, out to Watson Road, back to the Ginter Road loop, the Riverside loop, and TWO sprints up the hill by my house. I ended up with 8.11 miles -- not bad for a run I didn't want to do! Of course, now I'm tired, and I have to stay awake to pick up Chris and Kate when they get home from the soccer game. I guess if I don't show up they'll call me!

Keep on running ...

Sunday Morning

It was about 70 degrees when I started my run today. About a block into the run, a gentle rain started to fall. I was hoping for more but, alas, it stopped after about 2 minutes.

I wanted to do a medium run today. I ran the front loop to the high school, a little past Ginter road, then did the usual Ginter Road loop, Riverside loop, and the sprint up the hill by my house. Along the way I saw several people on bicycles, two runners, and two or three walkers. It was a nice morning for a run.

As I was at the furthest point away from home in my run, my legs started to bother me. It was how I expected to feel yesterday, the day after the long run. Apparently there is a day delay! Anyway, I was able to keep running with just a few walk breaks. When I "got into the groove", I glanced down at my Garmin and noticed my pace is faster than last week. I think for the next two weeks I'm going to try to wear the heart rate monitor and see how my heart rate is doing.

I ended up with 6.53 miles. We are off to Oxford to visit Earl for his 18th birthday, so my legs will probably stiffen up on the drive.

Short Run/Short Post

Since yesterday was my first long run in a while, I knew today should be a short run. I was surprised at how well I felt, though. I wanted to run longer, but I have a tendency to over-train right before a race and it seems like I always end up with some sort of injury or soreness. So, today I did the back way to the high school and then back to the Riverside loop, ending, as usual, with the sprint up the hill. I ended up with 4.25 miles. I felt great when I was finished.

First long run in a while

It was warm and humid this morning compared to this past week -- about 73 degrees by the time I started my run. I am on vacation today, so I started a little later, but it was still dark outside.

I did the usual run through town, Lowe's parking lot, Mall parking lot, back through town -- but then I added the Ginter Road loop, finished with the Riverside Loop and a sprint up the hill by my house.

I have decided to sign up for a 1/2 marathon in Cleveland on September 7th -- just over two weeks away. I wanted to see if I could survive a relatively long run before I sent my money off. I ended up this morning with 10 miles. I've read that if you can do a 10-mile training run, you should have no problem with a 1/2 marathon (13.1 miles). So, I think I'm set! Now, later today if I have trouble walking, we'll see if I'm still as confident.

I'm going to stick to my shorter runs during the week (well, 5-7 miles), and try another long run next weekend. I'm now very carefully watching what I eat to see if I can drop a few pounds before the race without compromising my nutrition. I've noticed my best running is at a weight just a few pounds under where I am now. So, there may be some "cranky" blogs as I try to eat well while still going to soccer games, football games, etc. -- stadium food is not the healthiest food to eat!

Another Morning Run

It was another early morning run today. The nights are getting cool, so the morning weather has been perfect for running.

I went the usual route in the dark -- through town, Lowe's, the Mall, back through town, etc., ending with the Riverside loop and the sprint up the hill. There was not much wildlife that I could see, but then again it was still dark outside. I ended up with just over 7 miles.

I am thinking about running a 1/2 marathon in early September, so I need to determine if I will be able to go the distance. I haven't had a good long run in quite a while. I'm going to try for a 10-12 mile over the weekend, and then decide about the 1/2 marathon. I do better with my running program if I have a race to look forward to, but this one is a little close.

Happy running :)

Monday Morning

I went for another early morning run today. It was the usual dark run -- through town, out to Lowe's, the mall, back through town. I didn't go all the way out to the Baptist Church, but I finished with the Riverside Loop and the sprint up the hill. That was about 6 miles.

Then, I woke up Christopher and he finished a run with me. He is trying to get back in better shape, and running is one of the best ways. We ran about a mile, so in total I ran about 7 miles.

I feel a little tired this morning, but that's probably because it's Monday. And, it's the start of a busy week!

Rocky River Run

We are in Rocky River this morning. I went on a fantastic run. It was short (4 miles) but beautiful. When I get back home I will add some pictures, if the pictures I took with my cell phone turn out.

UPDATE 08/17/2008 - I added two pictures I took with my cell phone during this run.

I went along some streets with beautiful houses and along the lake. I ran through the park a little bit and went to the waters edge. What a sight -- the sun reflecting on the water. The run back was a little tougher. I had not realized I was running slightly downhill on the way to the park, so it was almost all uphill on the way back. Whew!

What a great way to start a Saturday morning.

Another Early Morning Run

This will be short as we are leaving for Cleveland this morning and I have lots to do yet.

It was another nice, cool morning. There was a bit of mist in the air; probably humidity from the rain last night.

I went pretty much the usual morning route -- through town and back, out Jefferson, the Riverside loop, and one loop up the hill. I ended up with 6.88 miles. I was a little surprised, because I thought I was running a little shorter route this morning.

All in all it was a good run. I feel more tired this morning, but I'll be sitting in the van for a long ride, so my legs can rest!

Another Dark Morning Run

I started shortly after 5:00 a.m. today, so it was still dark outside. It was a nice, cool morning. I did the usual run through town, and around the Lowe's parking lot. I decided to cross the street and run around the Wal Mart/Mall parking lot. Then it was back through town, Jefferson to the Baptist Church, then the Riverside loop, and one and one-half of the hill loop by my house (I was trying to hit 7 miles). I ended up with 7.12 miles.

Since it was difficult on Tuesday to see the sidewalk at times, today I wore a hat that has some little lights on it. I didn't turn it on until I was on Jefferson. It did help me see the sidewalk, so I felt better about not tripping on something!

For the first time I felt a little uncomfortable running by myself. As I was running up past the college, someone hollered and whistled at me. I chose to ignore it, but I was a little nervous when I came back by the college. I didn't see nor hear anyone at that time, however. It is reassuring that I usually see a city police cruiser parked somewhere along my running route. Usually it is by the stores across from the mall. Today I saw it on Jefferson by the florist.

That's it for now. I hope to get a run in tomorrow morning.

Running in the Morning Darkness

I didn't run on Monday, and my mood was definitely affected. So, I knew I needed to run today. There are many activities going on before and after work, so an early morning run was the only way to get it done.

I took off before 5:00 a.m. this morning. It was a pleasant, cool, morning, but DARK. I ran through town and almost to Lowe's, then decided that parking lot was a little too dark this morning. So, I crossed the street and ran through the mall parking lot a bit. Then I ran back through town. As I was running down Jefferson to do the loop to the Baptist Church, I realized just how dark it still was outside. There are not many streetlights, well at least not many that are working. I couldn't really see the sidewalks. As cars would pass by, I could see the sidewalk because of the headlights. I'd try to memorize what I could see (cracks, bumps, raised parts) so I could continue running until the next car came along. It certainly was a brain exercise, too early in the morning! It was still dark as I was on my way back from the Baptist church, but the sun was starting to come up. I finished the Riverside Loop and the sprint up the hill by my house with enough daylight to see.

It was not my best run, but not a bad one. I ended up with 6.43 miles.

Sunday Morning

In keeping with my "needing to run everyday" philosophy, off I went this morning on a planned short run. It was another beautiful morning. It was cool, sunny, not too humid -- great weather. I went the usual back way to Ginter Road , the Riverside loop, with a little extra at the end to reach 6 miles (actually 6.05). I really was going to make it a shorter tun, but it was just too nice outside. I also had put some new music on my Ipod and I was trying to get to it (on shuffle).

I believe my mood is better with the 6+ miles, anyway. I was sore after yesterday's run, but today I feel good physically. I need to start doing some strength training/pilates/etc, but right now it is difficult to find the time. Once the kids are back in school I can do this during my lunch, since I work from home.

Up, up and away ...

I didn't see any wildlife on my run this morning. However, I did see a site I've never seen before while running -- a bunch of hot air balloons taking off! By the time they finished, there were 6 or 7 in the sky. I saw them go up one by one. I tried to take some pictures with my cell phone, but they didn't turn out very well. As I got further out in the country I saw a couple stopped by the side of the road in a pickup with a trailer behind them. They told me the balloons were doing some sort of target competition.

It was a beautiful morning for a run. It was around 60 degrees when I started out. I went the back loop past the high school, and even past Watson Road. I came back the Ginter Road loop, and as always finished with the Riverside loop and the sprint up the hill. I ended up with 8.3 miles. I'm trying to gradually increase my weekend runs, and get at least one long run in. I don't know how long before I am back to those 12 mile runs on the weekends. The problem is that the weather will change all too soon. I am not looking forward to when I have to go back on the treadmill. I can handle shorter runs on that, but not a long run. I've got some cold weather running gear, and I may have to get more for those weekend runs.

I have figured out that I really need to run every day; otherwise my mood deteriates. I didn't run on Friday this week, and felt blah all day. So, unless there is some compelling reason, I will try even harder to get up every morning to run. The children start school soon, so the afternoons/evenings quickly fill with activities. I find that if I don't make time for a run first thing in the morning, it often does not happen!

That's all for now.

Sunrise on the River

I went for a run this morning after working most of the night. I went the usual morning route -- out to Lowe's, around the parking lot, back through town, out to the Baptist Church, Riverside loop - I always finish with the Riverside loop and end with a sprint up the hill by my house.

As I ran across one of the bridges, the sun was starting to come up. What a beautiful site -- the sunrise reflecting on the river. I should have taken a picture with my cell, but I had a good pace going and didn't want to stop. But, I'll carry the picture in my head today. So, when things get stressful or I start feeling a little depressed, I'll try to remember that site.

Anyway, I ended up with 6.78 miles. I think I'm getting faster -- I run about the same amount of time, but I keep having to add an extra block or extra loop (today it was an extra loop around the Lowe's parking lot) to get that time in.

I'm not sure if I will get up to run tomorrow -- with little sleep last night and no time for a nap today, I may need to just sleep in!

Gotta keep on running ...

Watching the sun come up over a sleepy little town ...

It was another great morning for a run. I almost didn't get up, then I figured I'd better, since I missed yesterday. I'm glad I kicked myself out of bed. It was cool, but still quite humid. I ran to the Lowe's parking lot and back through town, out to the Baptist Church and finished with the Riverside Loop.

It was dark when I started out, but the sun was coming up. The traffic was already starting to pick up when I started off. I do have one "pet peeve" -- why don't drivers respect the marked crosswalks? I will have the "walk" signal, but have to either swing way out into the road or cut between cars to cross, and neither is a safe thing to do, especially when it is not completely light outside! Drivers need to realize the marked crosswalk is there for a reason. This morning it seemed like this happened to me at every street I crossed. And these weren't even cars that were inching up to see to turn right on red. Oh well. That's just another thing to deal with on the run. That's why I prefer to run more in the countryside, but I don't do that when it's not light outside.

Riverside Park was beautiful this morning with the heavy mist rising as I ran by. If I'd had more time, I would have run through the park itself to get the feeling of running through the clouds -- the mist was that thick.

I ended up with 6.68 miles. I will try to get up tomorrow morning for another run, but it may be a long night at work tonight ...

Monday Morning Run

We are starting to get into our "busy" time (even though it seems it is always busy), so I have decided I'm going to try to get up in the mornings to run. There are just too many things going on in the evenings. Eventually I may have to get on the treadmill in the mornings if it gets too dark.

This morning I ran (in the dark) through town and up to Lowe's. Then I ran back through town. It was a little disconcerting at some points because not all the street lights are working. After I ran through town, it was starting to get light, so I ran out Jefferson to the Baptist Church, and finished with the Riverside Loop. I didn't see any wildlife this morning except for some domestic cats. It was probably too early for the deer to be out and about!

I ended up with 6.20 miles, not bad for an early morning run. Now if I only had time for a nap ...

Beautiful Morning

It is a beautiful Saturday morning, and a good morning for running. I started around 7:00, before it started getting too warm. I went the usual back way to Ginter Road loop/Riverside Loop. I took an extra loop at the end -- a short one -- trying to get a little more mileage in. I ended up with 5.95 miles.

I didn't see much wildlife except for the occasional rabbit or cat. I didn't even see any other runners/walkers, which is unusual for a Saturday morning. I think many people are on vacation this week -- trying to get the last summer vacation in before school starts. Maybe next year we will get a vacation in -- probably a race somewhere!

Friday Morning Run

I haven't gone for a run in a couple of days, but I have a good excuse. On Wednesday, I took my daughter and her friend to the Vans Warped Tour in Cincinnati. We left around 6:30 a.m. and got home well after midnight.

But, I went for a run this morning with my friend (same one from Tuesday). We were able to get about 5.17 miles in before work this morning. It was a pretty good run. There was nothing really exciting about the run. It's a good thing I didn't wait until this afternoon -- we were hit with thunderstorms.

Maybe I'll get a couple of good runs in this weekend.

Tuesday Morning Run

I went running with one of my friends this morning. Our kids were in a contest together on Sunday night, and we decided to make a running date for this morning. Both of us probably would have slept in if we didn't have plans - it's one of those types of mornings. She said she almost called to cancel, but didn't.

We started off around 5:30. It was already muggy outside. Since it was still dark, we ran through town, and up to and through the Lowe's parking lot. We then ran home. We did not do any of the "almost country" running today. I probably should have continued on after we finished, but I needed to get ready for work. We ended up with 4.5 miles. I try to get in at least 5, but it's better than no run at all.

I will be out of town tomorrow so there will be no run. Maybe Thursday, if I can get up after the late night Wednesday.

Sunday Morning Run

Today was another perfect morning for running. I felt good this morning -- I've had two nights of uninterrupted sleep.

I used to train using a Heart Rate Monitor program. I haven't been training lately since I have no long races planned, but I decided that I would go back on the training program starting in August. Under the training program I use, there are some times when the heart rate has to stay below a certain point, within a certain range. When I first start up the training again, it is usually difficult on these days -- I have to walk sometimes just to keep it down to that point. After a week or two I am able to keep the rate low while running. I attribute this to the days when I have to push the rate up -- and after a few days of these I think the body is more efficient.

I decided to strap on the heart rate monitor this morning just to see what kind of shape I was in. I wanted to emulate one of the slower days on the training programming since I had somewhat of a long run yesterday. Well, I surprised myself. I was able to keep my heart rate within the range for the "slow" days of the training program while running. It wasn't an extremely fast pace, but it was a pretty good pace. So, all of my running this summer, even though I haven't been following any program, has been getting/keeping me in shape.

It was a good run; I ended up with 5.75 miles (I had planned on about 4). I did the usual Ginter Road/Riverside Loop (not the back way). I saw a doe and her fawn frolicking in the woods, a flock of yellow finches, and the usual rabbits. I didn't pass too many other runners/walkers this morning -- so many people missed a beautiful morning to be out!

Saturday Morning Run

It was slightly overcast and cool (well, at least not too hot) when I woke up this morning. I needed a run, of course, so off I went. I felt a little sluggish when I started. It could have been due to eating too much junk food yesterday, or the fact I fell asleep on the couch and slept there all night, or some other reason. After a mile or so the sluggishness started to wear off.

I tried to keep a steady pace -- not too slow, but not too fast, either. My goal was to get a slightly longer run in than I have been lately. I needed to make sure I had enough energy to go an extra mile or two. And just now I realized I bought some Sports Beans yesterday so I could bring them along on a run today. Oh well, I will bring them the next time I plan a longer run. For those not familiar with Sports Beans, they are jelly beans from the makers of Jelly Belly jelly beans (the best jelly beans in my opinion), and they contain nutrients for runners, etc. It is easier to carry these than Gatorade or some other sports drink. Often I have route where I can stop and drink water from drinking fountains, so the Sports Beans give me the electrolytes I need.

I had to edit this -- I forgot to mention what little bit of wildlife there was. I saw the usual rabbits, yellow finches, etc., but the most interest thing happened as I crossed the Hopkins Street bridge. I looked down in time to see a heron catch a fish.

I ended up going the back way and the extended Ginter Road route -- meaning I ran all the way to Watson road and then back to do the Ginter loop. I ended with the Riverside loop. I did meet my goal -- I finished with exactly 8 miles.

I've got to run!

Morning Run

I decided to get up early this morning and run. Well, actually I turned off my alarm and was going to sleep a bit more, but my husband started snoring, I couldn't sleep, so I figured that I might as well get up.

It was still a little dark when I started off. Instead of the usual route, I ran through town to the end of the sidewalk near Lowe's. By the time I ran back through town, it was light enough to do a little bit in the country. I didn't go all the way to the high school, just to the Baptist Church. But, I did finish the Riverside loop. I ended up with 6.18 miles. The only issue was that, because I ran on sidewalks through town, my knees hurt a little bit. The concrete just doesn't give as much as the roadways. At least my hip isn't sore (so far) this morning.

It was a beautiful morning to run. It was interesting watching the town "wake up" on a Thursday morning. The traffic was very light when I started, and it got heavier as my run progressed. I saw more runners and walkers out than I have seen lately in my afternoon/evening runs. I didn't see wildlife like I expected, but I didn't go that far out of the city. Riverside Park was beautiful with the mist rising from the soccer fields.

I'm glad I ran this morning. Now if I can just stay away tonight when we go to see The Dark Knight!

Yet again in the hot sun

I managed yet another run in the hot sun. It was the usual -- back way/Ginter Road/Riverside loop, ending up with just over 5.5 miles. I completely re-did the songs on my Ipod Shuffle, so there was something new about the run. Since my daughter and I (and her friend) are going to the Vans Warped Tour next Wednesday, probably half the songs were from the Warped Tour CD.

For the few people who actually read this blog, I probably won't be posting another run for a few days. About a mile from home my leg started to go numb, and my hip is now extremely sore. I'm going to try to rest it for a day or two. I'm busy tomorrow and didn't plan a run anyway. If I do anything, it will be a walk or slow run.

I'll have to find another way to keep my sanity the next few days. I feel so much better after a run, even when it seems too short, too hot, or too stormy.

Monday, July 21, 2008

Finally

I finally was able to finish a run today without having to retreat from storms. But, it was hot and extremely humid. I went the back way/Ginter Road/Riverside loop, and I kept hoping for a little breeze. I would have welcomed a rain shower today, but I was glad for the lack of lightening and thunder.

It wasn't my best run because it was so hot and humid, but I still managed to get in just over 5.5 miles. I will probably not get runs in every day this week as it is a very busy week. My goal this week is for at least 4 runs -- if the weather cooperates.

Another run thwarted by the weather

After yesterday's run that was cut short, I got up early today to go for a run. As I started out, I thought I heard thunder, but just then a train went by, so I thought it was just that.

Well, I was about the same spot I was yesterday when the rain hit -- and I hear thunder and see lightening. I turned around and sprinted as fast as I could home. As I mentioned in another post, I don't like lightening! I was in our backyard a few years back when lightening struck our house (that was pretty scary), and when we lived in Florida I actually felt a tingle when I was outside (running to my car) during a storm and then a big bolt of lightening lit up the sky just as I got into the car. I read later that when you feel a tingle like that, you are in danger of being hit.

Anyway, I didn't get too wet because I made it home before the downpour. I ended up with 2.85 miles. I guess if I combine yesterday's afternoon run and today's morning run, I can say I ran once this weekend! Maybe tomorrow it will be better ...

Torrential Downpour

I love to run in the rain, as do many runners. This afternoon I started out on a run and there was a gentle rain -- perfect for a run. As I continued with the run, the rain came down harder and harder. I still didn't mind. I was about 1 mile from home when the air cooled drastically, the wind picked up and blew my hat off my head, and there was a loud clap of thunder. Just about then, the skies opened up and a torrential downpour started. I may be crazy sometimes, but I knew I had to cut my run short. It wasn't the rain, it was the thunder. I've been close to lightening too many times. I ran back home, and got just over 2 miles in. At least it was something! I am going to try to get up in the morning and run before going to Dayton.

Friday, July 18, 2008

Fantastic Run

First of all, yes I missed a day's run. But I have a good excuse -- I went golfing. It was the first time EVER that I played golf. Luckily it was a scramble, so it didn't matter. It was fun (and I was the only one who was NOT drinking beer; I stuck to water).

Tonight when it finally cooled off a little bit, I went for a run. It felt great. I finally got a little better pace going again. At 50 minutes into the run, I decided to set a goal for how many miles I could finish in an hour (a little late in the run, I know). I had to push it, but I made my goal. Then I pretty much walked the remaining short distance home.

I went out past the high school, turned around at Ginter road, did the usual Riverside thing, then decided to run by the library. I expected to see more wildlife as it was turning dark, but I guess it was still too hot for the deer, etc. I did see (and run into) many insects, however!

I ended up with just over 6.5 miles, a good run for me right now. I'm going to try to get two runs in this weekend, but I may not make Sunday's run due to a trip to Dayton.

Why I run (not about a run)

Some people question why I have embraced running as I have. Sometimes I wonder myself! So, I decided to write a blog to explain to myself and others why I like running so much.

With three teenagers, a handicapped adult child, an elderly mother-in-law, issues with my siblings, and just life in general, I currently have the potential for a lot of stress in my life. At times in the past it has become almost overwhelming.

The main reason I like to run is that it helps my mood. When I feel anxious, worried, stressed, or depressed, there is nothing like a good run to make me feel better. I may still have the same feelings after a good run, but they are much less intense and I am usually able to logically figure out why I am experiencing these feelings and even come up with solutions. When I run in the morning, it helps me to remain calm when I have too many "fires to put out" on my job, and I am more productive. I know some members of my family have noticed how running improves my mood, and I have been asked, or told rather strongly, to go for a run at times!

But, I like to run when I am happy, too!

There are other reasons I run. I have a family history of heart disease. I eat right, am not overweight, and I still have high blood pressure. So, I am running from heredity. I've finally started to get somewhat of a runner's build (as much as I can with my family genes), and I like the way I look when I stick to a good running plan. I also feel more energetic when I run regularly -- except for those days when I get up early to run after having stayed up too late the night before! I also sleep better when I am running regularly.

When I run, I am able to think about all sorts of things or even meditate in some ways. I'll listen to some good music and watch the world around me. I pay attention to the nature around me. On runs I have seen deer, rabbits, birds, groundhogs, and many other animals. I almost was run over by a deer once! I have discovered the joys of running in the rain and of running at night. Everything is so different at night! Only true runners understand how satisfying it is to run in the rain -- one of my favorite runs is when it is moderately warm and there is a gentle (or even not so gentle) rain falling. It is as if any problems in my life are washed away.

In the winter, when I am relegated to the treadmill for most runs, I get a chance to catch up on movies or television shows (mainly from the Sci-Fi channel) that I have missed because I was otherwise occupied, or because I fell asleep while watching them.

Running is one of the few things I do just for myself. As a wife and mother with a full time job, most of my time is spent doing things for other people. I will run by myself or with friends. I like to encourage others to run. I believe it is better to have a nice conversation while running than over a beer (I don't drink anyway) and fatty food.

I also gain a sense of accomplishment through running. This can be by reaching a goal of running a specific number of days/miles in a week, finishing a race, or bettering my time from race to race. I never set a goal to place in my age group or finish first, but it certainly is great when I do accomplish this.

And last, but not least, I run so I can eat more chocolate!

Morning Run

I guess it is a good thing last night's run was more of a walk. Late last evening one of my running buddies called me up and suggested an early morning run for today. She and I haven't been running together for a while, so of course I said "yes."

We left at 5:30 a.m. this morning as I have to be home by 6:30 or so in order to get my shower in and start work by 7:00 a.m. The sun was just coming up and it was not too hot (but it wasn't really cool, either). It was fun to run in the morning for a change. We had some nice conversation along the way, and the run was over much too quickly. There was not much wildlife out and about; I expected to see a lot this early in the morning. It was a fun run and we decided to do more of these morning runs. I'm sure I'll be tired this afternoon, though. I used to run almost exclusively in the mornings, so I'll get used to this again quickly (I hope).

We ended up with 5.55 miles.

Hot outside

It is very hot outside today. I went for a run with a friend -- it actually was more of a brisk walk than a run. We would start to run, but after a few minutes we needed to walk. We alternated this way, with more walking than running.

We saw a little bit of wildlife, but most of the creatures were staying out of the heat. We saw a rabbit (there are always rabbits hopping about), a cardinal, a red-winged blackbird, and a heron of some sort.

I needed an easy day, so it was a good day for this. My hip was hurting quite a bit last night, and I don't need problems with that again. Oh, the pain (literally) of running when we are a little bit past our prime! Even with the heat, though, we managed 5.25 miles -- not bad.

Monday, July 14, 2008

short post

This is the usual -- hot (well, not so humid) run. It was 5.56 miles. I was pretty close on my estimate for yesterday's run -- I ran the same route today. Nothing unusual, but I feel oh so much better after a run!

Sunday, July 13, 2008

Another hot run

I went for another hot, humid run. It seems like the weather in Ohio has been that way lately!

And, since my 50-year old brain sometimes misfires, I turned on my Garmin, but apparently turned it off after about 1 block. I estimate I ran 5.5 miles, but since I was trying to shake up my route a bit, I'm not exactly sure. But, I've done well with my running almost every day routine -- let's see if I can keep it up! I'd like to get to the point where I am back to steadily doing at least 30 miles a week (that's 5 days at 6 miles, or 6 at 5 miles, or somewhere in between), and then start increasing again. At one time I was running 40-50 miles a week, and I felt really good.

I want to take advantage of the fact I can get a lot of outside runs in right now.

Blah Blah

Another boring post. These are mainly for me, anyway. It's been too hot for any interesting wildlife, although this morning I did see a pair of yellow finches.

It's hot, humid, and I needed to get home before the predicted storms (yet again) hit us this morning. I ran 4.55 miles. At least I'm sticking to the "almost every day" run. In a week or so, I'll start trying to step up the mileage, if the humidity lessens a bit!

Thursday, July 10, 2008

This will get boring

My runs have been pretty non-eventful lately. But, I have been able to go for a run three days in a row -- so I think I'm finally getting back on track. Today was the usual high school/Ginter Road/Riverside loop. My time was a little slow -- that happens when you try to talk on the phone while running! I ended up with just over 5.6 miles. It was hot, but it felt good. I always sleep so well after an early evening run.

I'll keep posting in the blog just to keep my incentive going, and maybe one of these days something exciting or different will happen again! I don't think anyone really reads these, anyway.

Great Hot Run

It was a hot day today. But, I wanted, no I NEEDED a run. So, off I went about an hour after work.

I went the usual route (I need to start changing things up a bit) - the back way to the high school, Ginter Road, and back to the Riverside loop, with one extra SHORT loop around my block.

I ended up with about 5.82 miles. I wanted to get 6 miles in, but the heat and the s'more I ate before the run (the worst idea I've ever had) said STOP when I ran by the house the second time, intending to go another loop or two.

Well, that's two days in a row. Maybe I can make it three!

Tuesday, July 8, 2008

Another short run

We've had a series of thunderstorms today, but I tried to get in a short run tonight between the storms. It would have been longer, but I stopped to talk to some friends I hadn't seen in a while.

I did the usual run out to the high school (well, not quite there because the sky started getting dark), then back and finished the Riverside loop. I only did 4 miles, but at least it was something.

I'm going to try to step up my runs a bit -- first by running more often, then increasing the mileage again on some runs. I miss those 10+ mile runs -- I really do!

Storms are coming. Time to get off the computer.

Great morning to run

Today was a great morning to run. The air was slightly cool, not too humid, and the sun was just coming up. It was the perfect morning to go for one of those long runs I enjoy. Unfortunately, my ankle is still a little stiff so I had to take it easy.

I just ran out to the high school and back, finishing up via Riverside. On the way to the high school, I saw a deer and two fawns. I tried to get a picture with my cell phone, but just as I was snapping the picture, a car drove by and they ran off into the woods.

My ankle managed to hold up OK (I did have to walk some of the time), and I ended up with 4.4 miles. It is a little stiff and sore now, so I'm going to not push the runs for a few days to give it some more time to hear. Darn bouncy balls!

Defiance River Run

Well, I wasn't sure how well this run was going to turn out. Last night, while carrying a laundry basket, I stepped on one of those little "bouncy balls" and twisted my ankle. I took some ibuprofen and kept it elevated.

Today was the race. The first part of the race took us through some muddy, pothole-filled section, but after that it was city roads. And, for once, I didn't have to wait at any streets for cars to pass.

My ankle hurt a little bit, but by the end of the first mile it was just numb. I ended up coming in second in my age group. I was just a little slower than my race 2 weeks ago -- 27:25 (two weeks ago it was 27:11). I feel good about the run -- I was able to run relatively well in spite of my ankle. I don't have any races scheduled for later this summer, but I think I'll need to find one or two just to keep myself motivated.

Also running in the race were some of my husband's cousins, his niece and nephew, their cousins, wives, boyfriends, etc. Four of us ended up placing. One placed 3rd in her age group, another placed 3rd in his age group, Ryan placed second in his age group, and I placed second in mine. It was a good showing for the family, but most of all we had fun!

Now it's time for a great brunch with the family.

Hot, hot run

I just got back from a hot, afternoon run. There was very little wind, either. I know it's crazy to run in the afternoon, but I have no other time today. I'm trying another 5K on Friday, so I don't really want to run tomorrow. I usually try to take a day off before a run.

Anyway, I did my usual Jefferson Ave/Ginter Road/Riverside loop. I tried to run some faster short sprints to get my heart rate up, and then walk to bring it back down. It seemed to work pretty well. I needed a slightly different workout today.

I ended up with 5.55 miles. Not too bad in this heat, I don't believe. I didn't see much of any wildlife, though. The animals know enough to stay out of the heat!

Sunburn hurts

Yesterday we spent the entire day at a soccer field. I had sunscreen on, but the torrential morning rains must have washed it off. The afternoon was bright and sunny. I didn't realize until last night how sunburned the tops of my legs were.

I decided to go for a run this evening. I forgot about the sunburn, and wore capri-length running pants. Ouch! I usually warm up with a walk, so it didn't hurt at first. As soon as I started running I could feel it. The smart thing would have been to turn around and not run, or change into shorts. But, once I've gotten started, I don't like to stop. So, off I went.

Other than the pain from the pants rubbing my sunburn, it was a relatively good run. It was a little warm, but the evening air cooled as the run continued. I saw some deer feeding in the fields; that is always a peaceful sight. I ended up with just over 5.5 miles. I hope the sunburn is better before my next run.

The rain failed again

Today started out as a perfect run. It was lightly raining as I left. But, about 5 minutes into my run the rain stopped. It is a hot and humid morning, so it was not the best run. I was way off my normal pace. Short run, short blog. I ended up with 5.6 miles in the time I usually run at least 6. But, at least I did get a run in before the all day soccer tournament!

Crazy

Tonight was a crazy night for run. I decided to take a chance, even though the radar showed rain coming. Earlier my daughter and I went for a walk and got caught in a heavy downpour.

I took off and it almost started to rain. But, alas, no. It was so humid that barely a mile into my run I was soaking wet. I had to run at a slower pace. I was looking forward to some good rain, but it never came.

But, there were good things about the run. I saw several deer along the way. One was so close that I could almost reach out and touch it. When I went past Riverside Park, I could see the steam rising from the grass. It was a beautiful night. Despite the humidity, I got in just over 6 miles.

I had to edit this. As I was doing today's run (6/28) I realized I had forgotten something. On this nighttime run, something really strange happened -- I was hit with a hula hoop! Some children were playing with one and it got away from them. I just laughed -- it didn't hurt and it was funny.

Afternoon Run

Since I didn't feel prepared for the last race, I'm trying to run at least a little bit almost every day before the next race.

Today I took off shortly after 4:00. It started out as a wonderful run -- it was raining, and I love to run in the rain. Alas, the rain only lasted about a mile into the run, and then it was just humid again.

I started out my usual "back road" route to the high school. There was some road construction, so I had to take the detour and ended up running on 15 a little bit. Then I was able to deviate back to my normal route, and then the Ginter Road loop.

It did turn out to be a nice run, despite the humidity. There were hardly any insects out (unlike my nighttime runs), and I saw quite a bit of wildlife. I saw a few herd of deer, and the usual rabbits, birds, etc.

I ended up with about 6.18 mile -- not bad for what started out as a short run.

I am out of town tomorrow, so I probably won't get a run in. You never know, though!

Short day after race run

I went on a short "day after race" run today. I ended up with about 4.5 miles. I just ran to the high school and back home. There was some wildlife -- I got pretty close to a deer.

But, now my legs are sore so it's time to rest!

Short run, short blog entry.

2008 Bullfrog 5K

I just got back from the 2008 Bullfrog 5K. What a great run! The day started out cloudy with a few storms. It rained on the drive to the race, and it felt cold and damp when we arrived at the Fulton County Fairgrounds. I brought a warmer shirt with me, so I changed into that one. There were a few ominous looking clouds overhead.

Just before the race started, the clouds cleared and the sun came out. We lined up to start and I placed myself in the middle of the pack (between the fast teenagers and the walkers). Finally the race started. I kept a good pace, and I realized I was passing many runners before we even got off the track. I guess I should have lined up a little closer to the starting line!

I kept a pretty good pace throughout the entire race. As the race progressed, I passed more runners -- and I did not get passed by any. I managed to run the entire race without taking any walking breaks. The race starts and ends on the track. Just before I got back to the track, I started getting stomach cramps (rare for me), but I just slowed my pace a bit and kept on going. It was a great feeling running through the finisher's gates!

The end result -- I ran this race 6 minutes faster than last year's race. I ran my fastest 5K ever. I'm not a fast runner, but I'll take 27:14. Hey -- it was good enough to take first place in my age group!

I'm a little behind -- 2 runs

I've been so busy that I am behind on these postings.

On Sunday morning (June 15) I went for a nice 7.35 mile run. I was in the midst of a stressful, extremely busy weekend, so I really needed the run. I don't remember a lot about it, but it was a beautiful morning, and perfect weather for running. Oh, I do remember getting at the furthest point away from home, and my legs started going numb (something new for me). As it was Father's Day, I didn't want to call and wake up my husband, so I walked for a while until I felt better. I had spent the better part of the weekend sitting in an auditorium, so that was probably what caused the issues. I was able to finish the run without any more problems.

I went for another run last evening (June 19). It was nice and cool, and still light enough to run. I don't like to run alone in the evening/nighttime, so one of my daughter's friends ran with me. There was a lot of wildlife around. We scared a rabbit or two on the run. And, as we were crossing the bridge on Jefferson (crossing the river) we saw some deer. One was a mother and a fairly young fawn. It was another good run, and I ended up with 7 miles.

I keep track of my pace with my Garmin, and I am getting faster, or so it seems. I am running a 5K tomorrow, and I'm curious how I do compared to last year. I don't feel as prepared, however, so we'll see how it goes. The real reason I am running it is for charity. This is the Bullfrog 5K run/walk in Fulton County, and the proceeds benefit Mennonite Central Committee and Sunshine Inc. of Northwest Ohio. My oldest daughter has been part of the Sunshine family for almost 30 years, so this is a good charity.

I'll try to post tomorrow as soon as I get home from the race -- good or not so good results!

Early Morning Run

I haven't been on an early morning run in a while. I've forgotten how much I like them.

Today I took off around 5:30 a.m. The sun was just starting to come up. As I ran on the bridge across the river, I saw the sunrise reflecting in the water. What a peaceful sight!

I ran to Lowe's (actually to the store - through the parking lot), then back through town, and the "extended" Riverside loop. When I started it was quiet with few cars. By the time I was running back through downtown, the traffic had picked up quite a bit. Once I got on the Riverside loop, though, their was no traffic and I was able to enjoy the sites and sounds of nature (well, I still had my ipod, but it was turned down).

I think I am getting faster. I have not been doing my usual training plan. I have just been running -- to have fun, relax, and keep in shape. I am participating in a race in about 1-1/2 weeks, so I'm curious to see how my time is.

Time to work! What a great way to start the day -- with a 6.67 mile run.

Peaceful Nighttime Run

Tonight was a very peaceful nighttime run. Of course, runs that end close to midnight tend to be quieter.

We've had several stormy days here in Northwest Ohio. There was another storm late this evening. Once the storm passed, the weather turned a little cooler. I decided to go for a run because I know I won't have time tomorrow.

I ran through the back streets to the library and then to the mall. I ran through town on the way back, and decided to finish with the Riverside loop, even though it was very dark! I tripped over fallen branches twice, but managed to keep from falling to the ground.

It was so quiet tonight. I was able to gather my thoughts together and get rid of some of the stress I'm feeling today. There were very few insects, because the city mosquito sprayer was out earlier in the evening. The main roads did not have much traffic. I was hoping to see some wildlife, but I wasn't that lucky tonight. All in all, it was a great run and I wish I could have gone longer. Sometime I'd like to get one of my running partners to go for a late night, long run.

I ended up with 5.36 miles. Not bad for running in the darkness.

Time to sleep.

Tiptoe through the ..... fallen trees?

Today was one of my most interesting runs. A storm went through town last night, causing many trees and branches to fall. A tree fell on our neighbors cars -- all three of them. We lost a tree limb, but luckily Earl's car was not parked out front like it usually is. A few trees across the street fell, too.

The storm damage seemed to be confined to the area between Hopkins Street and Riverside Park, and the streets of Jefferson, Washington, and of course Riverside. That is my usual running route. I went out past the high school, and there were no limbs down much past Williams Street.

I had to run in the street most of the time. Luckily most of the trees and branches had been moved off the streets (except for 3 trees on Jefferson), but the sidewalks were still covered. I had to be careful when I ran under trees, because I could see there were still several broken limbs hanging in the trees.

Aside from dodging the trees and tree limbs, it was a good run. It is still quite humid, but it is not as warm (yet). I needed the run as today is my son's graduation party. I ended up running past the high school, then back home and a short Riverside loop, stopping to take a few pictures. I ended up with just over 6 miles.

I guess instead of mowing the lawn in preparation for the party, we will be clearing branches ...

Whew!

I attempted a run tonight. Well, I actually finished, but it was tough. I called my normal running buddy and talked her into a short run. Even though we didn't start until 9:00 p.m., it is so hot and humid that it was difficult. We made it just under three miles (the Riverside loop plus another half of the loop) before she had to stop - she still had to mow her lawn before leaving on vacation (with a push mower -- no motor). I wanted to get at least five miles in since it's been a while. I stopped at home to get my ipod, and almost didn't start again. But, I knew that once I started I would be OK. I finally took off and ran to the college and back. All in all I ran just over 5.25 miles. The bugs were not as bad as during the last run. I feel pretty good, but it is so humid outside that it took its toll on me. I am going to sleep well tonight! Short blog -- it's bedtime for me.

The run that almost wasn't

I really didn't want to go for a run tonight. I was tired and it's been a busy week. But, on Friday we are planning to go out, and I am busy Saturday and Sunday so I don't know if I'll have time for a run, so I knew I should. I finally talked myself into it. My daughter is at a friend's house helping her recover from surgery, my oldest son is in Washington DC, and my other son is sleeping early. My husband is driving bus to a track meet, so it was just me and the animals. I thought about just sitting around, eating, and watching TV -- and then I said "naaah" and put on my shoes and went out the door.

It is a nice evening, and I could smell the blossoms in the air (I don't know what kind of blossoms, but they certainly did smell nice). But, there are a lot of bugs -- and I mean a LOT of them out there. When I got home I had to take a shower right away (usually I write in the blog first) because I had them all over! I'm not sure how many I didn't spit out as I was running (ugh).

Even though it was not one of my best runs, it was decent. I had to walk a bit, but I believe I have picked up the pace and am running faster than I used to run. I ended up with 6.2 miles -- not bad for a run that almost wasn't! And it certainly was better than sitting around on my #%* eating junk food and watching television.

Tired Run

I went for another evening run on this Tuesday. First, I went for a walk with my daughter and her friend, then with just my daughter, then a run/walk with my son. So, before I even started MY run, I had gone over 4 miles.

Finally I was able to go for it. I put in my ipod and away I went. It didn't help that I was tired (see previous paragraph) and the wind started blowing, dropping the temperature. It was tough at first and I almost turned around at about 1/2 mile, but I knew I needed to run, so I kept going. As usual, after about 3 miles I finally got "into the groove" and enjoyed the run. I ended up with about 5.4 miles, which is not too bad considering the over 4 miles I walked in the afternoon.

I feel tired, but stress free. I think I'll sleep well tonight!

Great Morning Run

There is nothing like an early morning Sunday run in the springtime. I left around 6:30 this morning. It was a little cool, the sun was coming up, and the birds were starting to wake up and sing. There was very little traffic -- all in all it was a quiet, peaceful run. There was no sound except the quiet pounding of my feet as I ran (and at times I had my ipod on, but very softly).

I ran the back way out past the high school and a little bit past Watson Road, then I took the Ginter Road loop on the way back. Since I was running out in the country somewhat, I was hoping to see some wildlife. I didn't see any deer, but I did see wild turkeys, geese (as always), squirrels, rabbits. Since it was so quiet, I was able to get quite close to the creatures. In fact, I almost ran over a squirrel. I finally had to talk to it to get it to move out of the way.

I went over 8 miles, and it felt pretty good. I was a little stiff at first since it was somewhat chilly and I hadn't run much this week. But once I got going I worked most of it out. When I got home, I realized that even though I only ran less than 20 minutes longer than I did on Wednesday, I ran 2-1/2 miles more! I must have picked up the pace a bit today. I do feel much better physically and emotionally after this run. What a great way to start a busy day! And, it's barely 8:00 in the morning and my family is all still asleep, so I still have some quite time left to myself.

OK Run

I went for a run tonight with my normal running partner. It was OK, but we only got in about 5-1/2 miles. We went out in the country a bit and it got too dark. I was going to run a few miles by myself afterward we were finished, but I just didn't feel like it -- and that's rare for me. It was enough of a run to get some exercise, but not enough to really get the endorphins going and make myself feel better.

But, it's better than sitting around watching television ...

Breaking in another one

I was breaking in another running partner today. We have a fitness challenge going on at work, and this co-worker and I are on the same team. He used to run and is about 17 years younger than me, so he should catch up to me quickly in regards to running fitness. The more running partners there are, the more likely it is to have someone to run with.

But, today was an extremely windy day. We were running into the wind most of the time, or so it seemed. We ended up with 4 miles, about 1/2 at a slow/medium run and 1/2 walking. All and all it was good for a first run. It would have been better without the wind taking our breathe away.

After we finished, I took off on my own. It was a busy weekend, plus one year since my father passed away, and I really, REALLY needed the run to burn off some negative energy. I ended up with another 4 miles, for a total of 8. I didn't do much walking; I already had gotten in a good warm up. After I got back home, my husband cooked up some steak fajitas. So, I got my veggies, protein, and carbohydrates after the run.

Sometimes (most times) I think running is the only thing that keeps me sane.

Now I feel great!

OK Run

I started out on a walk/run with my son. After we got home, I really wasn't in the mood for a run. But, I dreaded the idea of waking up and getting on the treadmill in the morning, and I knew I needed the exercise. I have lost some weight and I need to keep from gaining. I have noticed my runs are much better now with the extra weight gone. So, off I went. I started kind of slowly because I was not in the best mood. But, as I went, I started feeling better and the real run began. The more I ran the better I felt. It is a nice, slightly cool night, but quite humid. I ran to Lowe's and then through downtown Defiance again -- my usual night run. I don't feel comfortable running by myself out in the country in the evening. I ended up with just over 6 miles. The only things I did not enjoy about this run were the bugs -- I'm sure I ended up with a few of them. I'm going to finish this now because I think I need a shower!

Saturday Morning

Today was yet another Saturday morning run. It was a little cool when I started -- about 39 degrees. I dressed a little too warmly, however, as it warmed up quickly once the sun came up (and once I got into the run more).

This time I took the country route. There was morning dew on the grass, and I could smell all the flowering plants, especially the lilacs. I ran past the high school and all the way to Watson Road before turning back towards home. I ended up running just over 7.5 miles. About 1/2 way through I started getting too warm. I had even worn my running gloves, so I ended up carrying those the last 3 miles.

It was not my best run physically. I woke up feeling pretty stiff (that's what I get for being 50, I suppose). I did try to stretch a little before the run, but it didn't really help. Finally, after about 3 miles, my muscles felt warm and the stiffness went away. I stopped and did some more stretches, then finished the run. I have noticed that, especially in morning runs, it really takes 3 miles or so for me to "warm up". That's probably one reason I prefer the long runs (marathons and 1/2 marathons) as opposed to the 5K races. But, it's easier to plan for and get to the 5K races as there are more within driving distance.

The next year or so I probably won't get to a marathon or 1/2. When there is one within driving distance, it seems the children have some important activity we need to/want to attend. I enjoyed running the Cincinnati Flying Pig 2 years ago, but now the annual High School Sousa Concert (band) is the same day as the Flying Pig. As I have one son still in band after this year, it will be another 3 years before I am free that weekend. I would like to do the Disney world Marathon and 1/2 some year -- perhaps in 2010 (it's in January).

I like to have plans for a race, because it helps keep me motivated during those times when I seem to "forget" how much I love to run and how it makes me feel. Maybe if I keep up with these blog postings, I can read them when I feel unmotivated and they'll give me the push to keep on running.

That's it for now ...

Rainy, nighttime run

I went for another nighttime run. There is a gentle rain, and the temperature is around 60.

First I went for a short warm up with two of my teenage children. They are just starting to get the running bug, so we decided on a "Riverside loop" combination of slow running/walking. They did great.

Then I needed to run more. My usual running partner had just eaten, so it was only me. Off I went. The rain picked up a bit, making it even better. I ran through town past the college to the Lowe's store, back through downtown, the junior high, Latty's Grove, Riverside Park, and then home. I was listening to some good music and even caught myself singing at times. What a sight I must have been -- a 50-year old soaking wet woman running through downtown singing! I ended up with just over 6.5 miles.

I hesitate to think what I would be like now if I did not run. I almost gave it up last year when my father was ill and then later passed away. Then when I found out I was in the NY City Marathon, I figured I should not stop.

Running is a time I use to sort through my thoughts, figure things out, or even just sing (a new thing for me lately). I also have been working through some issues from decades ago. There was a time when I was in an abusive relationship (ex-husband) and I have blocked much of that time out. I remember what happened, but only mentally. The emotions were blocked, but always there in the subconscious. Tonight I found myself remembering some of the feelings from that time, and I was able to handle them and work through them. I feel much better!

Another perfect run ...

Sunday Morning

I was awake at 2:00 this morning, and I couldn't get back to sleep. I was waiting for the sun to start coming up so I could run. I seriously thought about going for a run at 3:00, but I figured that wouldn't be too safe.

It was a cool, crisp, Spring morning -- around 40 degrees when I left my house around 7:00 a.m. The sun was up, the birds were singing -- another great day for a run. I headed out into the country and ended up running about 7.5 miles. I'd have liked to run more, but my body was not cooperating this morning and I was getting tired. I saw many birds around, but no other wildlife. I came home to a nice cup of tea and a shower.

I am enjoying my outdoor runs. I hope to find a way to do more of them during the week. But, since I start work so early and have too many activities in the afternoon/evenings, it's hard to fit them in. I'm OK with the treadmill runs -- at least it's a way to keep up.

Saturday Morning Run

I've come to the conclusion that no one reads these, but I'll keep writing them for myself -- it's a good way to keep track of my ourdoor runs, at least.

It was another perfect day for a run. It was not too cold, not too hot, and overcast. It had rained overnight, so there was a bit of humidity in the air. I strapped on my Garmin and away I went.

I decided to run through town first. There is a Lilac Festival going on later today. As I ran through town, the vendors were starting to set up their booths and I could feel the festive like atmosphere beginning. I hope the rain holds of so it's a great day for this. I want to hear some of the live bands that will be around later in the afternoon.

Back to the run -- After I went through town, I went out in the country just a bit. I saw a young cardinal that could not fly very well. I hope it survives, but there is really nothing I could do for it. It hopped/flew a little bit as I ran by. Once I was out in the country, I picked up the pace a bit. I've lost a couple of pounds recently, and I can really tell when I run. It seems I can run faster with less effort.

On the way home I passed by Riverside Park, hoping to see some more wildlife. Alas, there was not much to see. In the evenings I sometimes see deer and geese about.

All in all it was a good run. I ended up with about 6.5 miles. I could have used a few more miles to work off some more of this stress, but I didn't have time. Maybe tomorrow ...

Sunday Afternoon Run

The weather has been cooperating lately in Ohio. It was yet another great day for a run. But, isn't every day a great day for a run, at least once you get started?

I decided I needed a run by myself so I didn't call my running partner. I need to get started on a training plan again. In the past I have had success with a heart rate training plan, so I wore my heart monitor just to get started again with this type of training. The BullFrog 5k is in June (just 8 weeks away, I discovered), and I'd like to be somewhat trained for that race. I mainly run that one because it benefits Sunshine, Inc., and my oldest daughter has been part of the Sunshine family since she was 5 years old. I ran it last year for the first time. It was the first race I participated in after my Father died, and I wasn't trained (I almost gave up running last year due to the family issues), so I didn't do very well. I plan to do better this year!

I had good music on my Ipod Shuffle, and off I went. I decided to head off into the countryside a bit. Unfortunately, the only real wildlife I saw was roadkill. I did see a lot of the human kind, however :) It's funny how friendly people are when they see runners. I still feel a little self-conscious when I run, especially when I am by myself, but I do find I wave at people I see along the way, and that helps. Towards the end of my run I saw a woman who I usually see running (she was working in her garden) -- she's a very good runner, wins all the races in her age group, and I think she is a running coach at the college. I did feel very self-conscious when I ran by her; I could imagine her saying "what an awkward runner, and look how slowly she is running ...". But, I continued on. I stopped at 7.30 miles. I really wanted to run more, but I don't want to get hurt again.

I'll probably be too busy this week for outside runs, so it's back to the treadmill. Maybe there will be an afternoon or evening when I can at least go for a short run ...

Late Night Run - 4/25/2008

I was out of town all week, in an unfamiliar area, so I did all of my running inside on a hotel treadmill. Ugh -- it was beautiful outside, but I just didn't feel safe running outside by myself.

I got back home too late last night to run. Besides, I had laundry and housework to catch up on. I slept in this morning (sleeping in for me means I didn't get up until almost 5:30 a.m.) and didn't have time for a run before work. I had to play catch up at work, so it was a busy day. Then, we had several teenagers over this evening (nothing unusual at our house). By the time everyone left and things settled down, it was after 10:30. I knew I needed a run and wouldn't have time in the morning, but it was so late. Then I took a step out the door. It was warm, breezy, springlike -- a perfect night for a run. I don't like to go alone, so I called my running partner. She was definitely ready for a run, too. She had been thinking about it, but didn't think I'd still be up (she was glad I called). We both needed one! So, off we went at close to 11:00 p.m.

It was a great run (really -- are there any runs that aren't great?). The weather was just right. For the first time this year I was comfortable, even warm, in shorts. The breeze kept me cool as I ran. We ran in town to be safe, and also I wear a hat that has lights on it. It was one of the best night-time runs I've had. We ran about 5.5 miles. When I got home I felt refreshed and ready to settle down for the night. But I remembered that I didn't post anything after my last run, so here I am catching up. And now it's almost 1:00 a.m. here, so ...

Good night!

Saturday Run - 4/19/2008

I didn't have time to post a blog after last Saturday's run. So, here's a quick post.

It was a beautiful, clear morning. I had a lot of things to do, but I decided to get up and go for a run. It was a great run. I watched the sun come up while I was running, and it put everything in perspective. It was a great way to begin what I knew was going to be a busy, stressful weekend. By the time I got home (I ran about 5 miles), my head was clear and my body felt ready for the days ahead.

Now if I only could find the time every morning ...

Cold, Wet Run

Ohio has certainly been having wacky weather lately. When it is nice outside (meaning relatively dry, no ice on the ground to cause me to fall, and just at or above freezing), it seems I always have necessary obligations that keep me from running outside. When I have time to run, it's cold, snowy, rainy -- usually all three.

Today my friend called and said she wanted to go for a run. It is cold (about 40 degrees) with off and on rain/snow/sleet. I was tempted to say no. But, my teenage daughter had a birthday party yesterday. There were 21 teenagers (boys and girls) present, and then 5 girls spent the night. Needless to say, I definitely needed the stress release, so I agreed to go.

On the way to her house, the wind picked up and the rain/sleet started to hit my face. I wondered what I was getting into. She was waiting on her porch, so off we went. As we ran, just when I would start to get too cold/pelted with rain and want to turn back, the sun would come out for just long enough to make me feel warm again. After a few miles, we were warm enough from running that the cold wind/sleet/rain actually felt good! Besides the running, we talk about our kids (our teenage boys are good friends), work, emotions, and life in general. We ended up running about 5.75 miles. By the time I got back home, I felt great! I'm relaxed and ready to enjoy the rest of the weekend.

I need to try to remember this -- running in even nasty weather can be fun and is definitely invigorating!

Finally a Run Outside

I went on a hurried run with a friend a few weeks ago, but today was my first solitary run outside in a long time. Every time we have a little break in the weather, it seems I have work or family obligations. Of course, with three teenagers, I'm always busy! I have been running on the treadmill several times a week, trying to get back in running condition, but there is nothing like a run outside.

I was doing some work today (yes, on a Saturday), and as I looked out the window I noticed how sunny it was. Given that we have had rain, snow, sleet, or else it's been very cold, and it is supposed to rain sometime today, I figured I'd better take my chance. I started some automatic loads for work, and then I had to dig around to find all my gadgets! By the time I found the case for my telephone, some of my cold weather gear, ipod shuffle and the strap for it -- it was about 45 minutes later! Luckily I already knew where my Garmin was. I dressed moderately warmly and was finally off.

It was great. At first I was a little self-conscience. I like to be anonymous when I run, but anymore too many people know me and my hats do not disguise me. That's another thing that happens when you have teenagers -- their friends and parents all know I run so they notice me when I'm out. And, Defiance is not a big town.

After a few minutes, though, I forgot about that. I was enjoying the good music, the sunshine, and the feeling one gets when running. I tried to apply the principles I had been reading about in the Chi Running book. I felt the winter blues lifting as I ran. I even started smiling while I was running. It was a little chilly on the way back because the wind picked up, but I enjoyed every minute. I was able to get 5.25 miles in. What a great way to take a break and get rejuvenated!

Now, let's hope Spring arrives soon so I can run more outside. It really helps lift the wintertime blues and get rid of some of the mental cobwebs.

Will Spring Ever Arrive

Ugh. I've finally gotten sick and tired of the treadmill. I want to run outside! I've been taking it pretty easy since December, just gradually trying to build up some on the treadmill. This is the first winter I didn't get an outside run at least once a week. I was afraid I would slip and fall with the ice, snow, etc. I don't think I've ever gotten this anxious to get outside and run.

I think tomorrow after work I will plan to run outside. Let's home the ice is gone from the sidewalks!
